DESCRIPTION:
The PL road side signal informs road vehicles that barriers
are closed or are about to close. The system uses a
red light with the chromatic characteristics indicated
in European regulations EN/TC 226. The DISCOLUX optical unit
was conceived as a replacement for
95V 25W or 12V 20W incandescent lamp groups curently in use
as light sources for road side PL signals. No container modification
intervention will be required and replacement times
are minimal.
The signal does not suffer from ghost effect phenomena since
it does not use internal reflectors that may feedback part
of any incident sunlight.
The optics group is compatible with the PL control circuit
currently used by the Italian State Railways,
requiring only a simple modification procedure. The signal
can be supplied complete with its thermoplastic container
or just the DISCOLUX optics group to include in existing signals. The
signal is fitted with a shatterproof polycarbonate lens.
When installing new DISCOLUX optics units on
existing signals in operation, by special request a replacement
polycarbonate lens to eliminate t he glass
lens, can be ordered together with the optics
group

OPERATING CHARACTERISTICS
The DISCOLUX optics group for PL road side signals was designed
for installation in existing plants. The DISCOLUX 95 supports
voltage variations between 95V ± 10V and the DISCOLUX
12, 12 ± 2V. The circuit is protected against polarity
inversions and against overvoltage. Light sources are arranged
in interconnected parallel rows so that any failure in an
open circuit causes a minimum visibility drop in the signal.
The colour emitted is red in compliance with regulation CEN/TC
226. Luminosity is greater than the minimum limits defined
by this regulation. The signal does not suffer from ghost
effect phenomena since it does not use internal reflectors
that may feedback part of any incident sunlight .
For compatibility with standard state railway PL control
circuits, the latter will require simple modifications that
are illustrated in the diagrams enclosed with the installation
manual.
It is particularly important, for the DISCOLUX 95,
to short-circuit the 100 omega resistance set as a limit to
lamp check current and to open the circuit in the second relay
coil.
For DISCOLUX 12 the current maintenance resistance in
the lamps will have to be removed and the relay shunt resistances
will have to be delayed.
